“Behind the Whip” is a photography book of portraits and interviews taken on location, in the city and dungeon of each participating global Dominatrix by photographer Maria Coletsis. The term dominatrix is often used to describe a professional dominant woman (or pro-domme) who charges money to engage in fantasy play with submissive clients. A dominatrix or mistress is a woman who takes the dominant role in bondage and discipline, domination and submission or sado-masochistic sexual practices, which are commonly abbreviated as BDSM. The photo essays within this book provide an intimate look at the women, their words and the dungeons which make up this fast growing sub-culture community. They discuss why they chose domination, why the service is in such demand, what exact services they provide, who their clients are, and how their services represent the city they work in.
